Sheron Wrayis looking for two dancers to participate in a research project.

Embodiology: The Total Africological Concept of Improvisation
To improvise is to embrace uncertainty, and since life is uncertain, with the exception of its certain termination,
harnessing unbounded creativity within the constraints of any circumstance produces radiant aliveness.
Introduction
This work follows on from the artistic director's consistent creative path of over twenty years of engaging dance,
music and technology through improvisation, and the objective of this project is to train a group of eight dancers
in the art of structured improvisation informed by African practices that leads to performance, Embodiology. This
research culminates in three informal performances but it will go on to serve a larger strategic project with ADAD
and the Texterritoryperformance platform which I created with Fleeta Siegel that involves the audience’s
participation via handheld technology. The training of performers in the art of performance improvisation,
sharpened by West African performance strategies, effectively leads to more efficient creative development
processes whereby the cohesion of intent and outcome are aligned more effectively – thus reducing production
time. This is not the rationale for the research, however it is a notable outcome.
The Undertaking
A group of dancers is selected to take part in the workshop-performance which takes place between late August
and early September 2013. Embodiology is conceptually linked to West African dance practices – Yoruba and
Ewe. Improvisation, in this case involves working with a distinctive dance vocabulary, engaging in
decision-making and competitive play while complex rhythm operates as the omnipotent structuring feature. The
artists work together four days per week, including the musicians on two of those days in a dance studio space
and during one session each week there is an extensive reviewing of video documentation. The conversations
about the work form another type of documentation of the development process. A project journal is kept by the
artistic director in order to facilitate a comprehensive means to see the arc of evolution of the Embodiology
method. It is expected that a concise vocabulary will evolve to illuminate the method extending what the
workshop-leader brings to the beginning of the process.
An informal showing demonstrating the Embodiology performance method is presented in a 30-40 minute piece
performed at GDA, Dance East, with a small excerpt at the Place in Touch Wood. The performance space
permits the audience to view the performance from any side – this porosity is also drawn from a West African
aesthetic. Of particular interest are the aesthetic values in West African dance performances that permeate into
forms of dance practiced throughout the African Disapora; Hip Hop and similar hybrids arising out of urban
centres.

Greetings,
Looks like we’re hopefully now into the sunny summer season! But don’t just stay outdoors lapping up the sun – come indoors and support the BBMM and non-BBMM events taking place.
Yesterday’s BBM Songs of Empowerment & Socio-Political Awareness Quiz was such an enjoyable experience, we’ll see if we can programme a repeat performance in July at our Friday/Saturday base Coming Soon Club in Wembley.
Those that attended the Quiz were urged to email details of the British conscious acts they highlighted, and you can do the same - send to: editor@BritishBlackMusic.com. We’ll either use it an expanded quiz or post a link to a list of acts, many of them unsigned, to look out for. Presently, we’re realing feeling Thabo And The Real Deal. Click to discover their ‘World War Free’ track.
We talked a bit about reggae at the Quiz, and you can join in deliberating further on the subject at next Thursday’s Can Roots & Culture Reggae Save The British Youth In The 21st Century? Debate.

Look out for a BBMM radio show kicking off shortly. Lastly, we introduce our Veteran’s Front Room talks programme on Friday June 14 with the first guest being former D’Influence member, record producer/remixer and founder of the Urban Music Seminar Kwame Kwaten.
Please find below a list of BBMM and BBMM recommended events over the coming week. Please plan ahead and support by attending!
Peace.

Veteran's Front Room: Talking Vinyl & Music Industry Memories With Kwame Kwaten BBMM2013 Sessions @ Coming Soon Club, Wembley. 6-8pm
We are very proud to announce that the first subject of our Veteran's Front Room: Talking Vinyl & Music Industry Memories session is none other than Kwame Kwaten - a musician, DJ, producer, remixer, songwriter, lecturer, manager, former member of the D'Influence band and production team, and founder of the Urban Music Seminar, which grew from humble beginings to occupy two days at the Royal Festival Hall.

This is an up close and personal encounter with Kwame in the settee, as he reminisces about how he discovered Shola Ama, who went on to win a best female Brits Award; the acid jazz scene and getting signed by the US branch of Atlantic Records; life on the road and in the studio with D'Influence; remixing and supporting Michael Jackson, his teaching and community work. If we're lucky, he might just spin us some of the records he's been involved in. Join us for this free, and relaxed talks programme within the intimate confines of the Coming Soon Club.

A DJ, yes. But he's also been a manager, promotions person, a general Mr Fixer! He's a superb raconteur - with marvellous stories of his music industry exploits - come and check out his stories, and tap into his industry connections! Started his career at BBC Radio Birmingham in the early 1970s, worked on the label, management and promotions of the early careers of Bad Manners, Loose Ends, Yazz, and Billy Ocean in the 1980s. A promoter at the Limelight Club and marketing consultant in the 1990s, and a DJ playing locally and internationally in the 2000s
